Brushing aside warnings from the Bush administration, the Taiwanese government announced Friday that it has applied for U.N. membership under the name Taiwan. The move drew an immediate condemnation from mainland China, which has vowed to use force if necessary to prevent the self-ruled island from acquiring formal independence.
